Both TMZ and People reported on September 22 that the LAPD and DCFS were investigating Pitt for allegedly getting "verbally abusive" and "physical" with one of his children while flying back to the U.S. from France. The LAPD later confirmed that it was not investigating anything related to Pitt while a DCFS spokesperson said it was not able to confirm or deny any information due to confidentiality laws.
The FBI then confirmed in a statement that it was in the early stages of an inquiry, as the alleged incident occurred in the air: "In response to your inquiry regarding allegations within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States; specifically, an aircraft carrying Mr. Brad Pitt and his children, the FBI is continuing to gather facts and will evaluate whether an investigation at the federal level will be pursued." On Tuesday, Pitt cancelled a scheduled appearance at a premiere for Terrence Malick's movie Voyage of Time, which Pitt narrates. He said in a statement, "I'm very grateful to be part of such a fascinating and educational project, but I'm currently focused on my family situation and don't want to distract attention away from this extraordinary film, which I encourage everyone to see."
